CBD Pioneer findings may help develop new drugs
CBD Pioneer findings may help develop new drugs for psoriasis, arthritis, and anxiety.
NBC News reports that decades after Raphael Mechoulam linked CBD with treating epilepsy. Now, the CBD Pioneer findings may help develop new drugs for psoriasis, arthritis, and anxiety. While early tests on Mechoulam’s compound are promising, caution is urged against expecting an immediate product.
Notably, the developments come at a time when Big Pharma is under siege from state attorneys general over the opioid crisis. This, of course, could open the door to exploring alternatives for treating pain.
Not much happened from the early research | Now things are moving fast!
So, Raphael Mechoulam is an Israeli organic chemist and professor of medicinal chemistry at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. He remembers the letdown after his groundbreaking discoveries. Including the structure of the cannabis compounds, CBD and THC in 1963 and 1964 went nowhere. And then followed by clinical tests with CBD establishing promising results with epilepsy published in 1980.

Now in September 2019, Mechoulam and a group of researchers presented at a medical cannabis conference in Pasadena, California. Announcing the development of a process for creating synthetic, stable acids that are found within the plant. In addition, the synthetic acids include acid versions of CBD and THC. Most importantly, they are now available for licensing to companies for drug development
What is CBD-A | Canabidiolic Acid studied for Nausea and Anxiety
In a 2018 British Journal of Pharmacology study, Mechoulam and his co-authors wrote that their synthetic compound, cannabidiolic acid methyl ester (called HU-580 in the paper) could be more effective than existing CBD remedies. Hence, making it “potential medicine for treating some nausea and anxiety disorders. Therefore, those initial clinical tests found the acids have yielded results on par, and even exceeding, existing treatments, without the side effects.
We know the U.S. government plans to spend $3 million to research CBD. Yet, pharmaceutical industry veterans still urge caution. And lending some insight regarding why more drugs have not been built on cannabis compounds.
First Likely Application from CBD Pioneer findings
The researchers believe first applications will likely be targeted to treat psoriasis in a topical cream. While other promising results suggest the active ingredient could be effective in treating the inflammation that brings on arthritis, anxiety and inflammatory bowel disease.
